China International Import Expo (CIIE) is one of the leading international events organized annually by the Government of China, which aims at further opening up its market and increasing imports. The fifth CIIE will be held from 5 to 10 November 2022 in Shanghai.

Centering on the theme of “Global Openness”, the Hongqiao Economic Forum is an integral part of the CIIE. It serves as a high-level platform that promotes dialogue among political, business and academic communities on matters related to global cooperation for sustainable development around the world.

The 5th Hongqiao Forum presents the opportunity to showcase experiences and best practices and to foster global alliances and partnerships for the development of environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive competitive industrial parks and special economic zones within the framework of South-South cooperation.

Sharing this common vision, UNIDO and the Ministry of Commerce of China are jointly organizing the Parallel Session of the 5th Hongqiao International Economic Forum, titled “Accelerating inclusive and sustainable industrialization through South-South cooperation – exploring the role of industrial parks & special economic zones”, to be held on 5 November 2022, in a hybrid format.

The parallel session aims to facilitate dialogue, exchange of experiences and best practices on innovative ways of implementing industrial parks and special economic zones initiatives to stimulate sustainable growth in developing countries. The session presents a multi-stakeholder platform for promoting a harmonized approach and effective tools to support the advancement of industrial parks across regions. It serves to highlight important emerging trends shaping the future of industrial parks, including the digital revolution, circular economy, urbanization, global value chains, and the Covid-19 recovery strategies.

As part of CIIE, UNIDO is hosting a Virtual Exhibition booth showcasing the organization’s expertise and achievements in four areas: Sustainable food systems; Industrial parks and special economic zones; Sustainable energy solutions and Digital transformation.

UNIDO’s participation in the virtual Exhibition presents its vast expertise in supporting Member States with the development, operationalization and implementation of industrial parks. The Exhibition also highlights UNIDO’s important work in the realm of digital technologies and the fourth industrial revolution, portrays its role in supporting the development of inclusive and sustainable food value chains, as well as the contribution it has towards an inclusive and just energy transition.

Besides the Hongqiao Forum Parallel Session and the Virtual Exhibition booth, UNIDO will participate and contribute to a series of sub-events of the 5th CIIE. In particular, UNIDO will co-host a side event titled “Climate Change and Low Carbon Development Forum 2022” together with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. Going further, the UNIDO Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO) in Beijing and CIIE Bureau are co-hosting the side event titled “The Fourth Industrial Revolution and Smart Mobility Forum”.   UNIDO is also participating in the Parallel Session of the Hongqiao Forum hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China under the theme of how “Industrial Internet Enables Manufacturing Industry to Achieve High-Quality Development”.
